CEEE held an International Engineering & Architecture Workshop for sustainable green buildings in Istanbul between 16-19 May 2011. The Workshop was organized jointly with the University of IllinoisUrbana Champaign (USA) and O\u0308zyeg\u0306in University . It was sponsored by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Turkish Science and Technology Council (TU\u0308BI\u0307TAK). The opening speeches of the Workshop were made by Prof. Erhan Erkut Ozyeg\u0306in University former rector, Prof. Erhan Erkut, Prof. Omnia ElHakim from NSF and Prof. M. P\u0131nar Mengu\u0308c\u0327. Later, policies and practices regarding sustainable buildings were discussed in 6 different sessions by speakers including architects, engineers, city developers, building contractors, and those representing academia, businesses and NGOs.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Representatives of important research groups from Turkey, USA, Italy, Canada and UK attended the workshop. Universities such as Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Kentucky, MIT, Southern Illinois University, Michigan State University, University of Nevada, Eastern Mediterranean University, Politecnico di Milano, Bog\u0306azic\u0327i University, Y\u0131ld\u0131z Technical University and California State University as well as representatives from major engineering and architecture firms such as Perkins+Will, Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill, IBM, Paragon International Insurance Brokers, Grontmij, Izocam, Thornton Tomasetti and Avci Architects participated in the workshop. Important international and local or ganizations including the US Green Building Council, C\u0327EDBIK, UNDP, REC, IBM, ULI, Embarq and UIN also contributed to the Workshop.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

There were a number of topics discussed in the workshop regarding sustainable building design practices. The titles of these studies were; (1) improving methods of verifying performance in sustainable buildings; (2) improving methods of evaluating building performance to increase motivation to build sustainable buildings; (3) raising awareness on renovating the existing buildings rather than demolishing old buildings and building new ones; (4) emphasis on project organization and engineering; (5) creation of integra ted modeling tools; (6) improving the adherence of buildings to their \u201chabitats\u201d so that they can contribute to their communities; (7) developing mechanisms to increase communication between managers, educators and professionals; (8) material selection criteria; (9) development of educational processes that encourage interaction of different disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After discussing these issues for a week, three action items emerged to enhance the ongoing interaction of participants: (1) developing concrete methods for better exchange of information between stakeholder communities; (2) to develop a plan to promote sustainable design while meeting future housing needs in global communities; and (3) to develop collaborative international partnerships to improve understanding between academic and professional practices.<\/p>

This week long workshop organized by CEEE, one year after the Zero Istanbul 2050 Workshop, has started extensive discussions in Turkey fort he value of the integrated architecture engineering social sciences initiatives, which resulted in the later transdisciplinary initiatives carried out by CEEE. In addition, energy efficiency was emphasized as the most pressing concept to be considered for future buildings.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
