Energy in Buildings and Communities Programme (EBCP) was initiated by International Energy Agency (IEA) in 1977 and has been conducted international research and dissemination activities in the field of building energy efficiency. The topics selected to be investigated by the program are studied by workgroups constituted by member countries and named as “Annexes”. Several reports for helping management and planning of international research activities as well as guiding decision makers and experts have prepared by completed and ongoing Annexes (86 in total).

Being proposed by IEA/EBC and initiated in 2020, Annex84 focused on buildings that are meet their heating and cooling demand by district systems. The activities are intended to determine technical and social challenges related to thermal demand management of these buildings and how to overcome those with future technologies. Some of the primary topics are integration with smart grids, advanced control systems, smart algorithms for demand management and smart infrastructure architectures. Annex84 is intended to straighten out the future efforts in this field by systematically synthesizing outcomes of research activities conducted in member countries.
